Generative AI vs. Generative Design

The creative process of content production is encompassed by generative design, a branch of generative AI. It entails the use of generative AI technologies to aid in this process. While generative AI supports tasks such as quickly creating a huge number of photos or producing art in real-time by employing neural networks trained on datasets such as an individual's Instagram feed, this approach may not correspond to the conventional concept of "generative design."

The Magic is powered by generative models!

Variational autoencoders (VAEs), autoregressive models, flow-based models, generative adversarial networks (GANs), and transformer-based models like GPT are generative models that can be used to create content. These generative models are employed in many domains, but especially in:

Leveraging Generative AI in creative processes.

The creative process can be aided by generative AI. Technology is capable of producing everything from images and films to sound, music, and writing. Its versatility grows as it learns from and improves on its own output. As Google's DeepDream filters have shown, generative AI may be used to create audio files that sound like they were created by a human artist (or even actual instruments).

The creative tools provided by generative models are still in their infancy, but they're worth looking into if you want something different than what traditional design tools provide.

1. Generative AI as a tool for idea generation

It can be especially valuable when brainstorming for new concepts since AI-powered platforms can uncover developing trends, customer preferences, and areas of potential to explore. This study can bring inspiration and insights that humans can utilize as a springboard for creative thinking and fresh views that can ignite creativity and break past mental boundaries. Here are some examples of very powerful AI-powered solutions that can aid in this area:

1.1 Ideanote

This application instantly generates an unending set of high-quality ideas to investigate based on goal-driven user inputs or prompts paired with the support of Ideanote’s trained AI. Initially, the tool simply requires the concept purpose, the company or project name, and a simple overview to produce ideas, but the user can choose advanced options such as the originality degree of the AI to refine outcomes.

1.2 ChatGPT

It is a platform created by OpenAI that allows you to quickly produce ideas based on fundamental information connected to a product, service, or purpose. In less than 20 seconds, you'll have ideas for consideration as final possibilities or as a starting point for further revisions in your creative process.

img-3@3x

In the previous example, I asked the tool to serve as an expert in strategic marketing and product positioning and recommend 20 ideas for a restaurant intending to attract and engage students and staff of a university while showcasing the restaurant's dedication to providing healthy food options. These were some of the outcomes. Impressive!

1.3 Tugan.ai

With the help of AI, this sophisticated tool rapidly creates ideas for marketing emails, tweets, or discussions. You only need to supply a URL and select the type of material you want to generate, and you'll get high-quality results in less than a minute.

img-4@3x

In the previous example, I asked tugan.ai to write a professional and persuasive sales email offering our services to a new lead from our website. The retrieved content is shown above.

2. Content creation with generative AI

Generative AI can also be used to create content, review and proofread content, and assist writers in improving their writing skills. You can also use this technology to generate material for design purposes or to test out different ideas before choosing one that works best in the context of your project. Let's look at a few examples.

2.1 Copy.ai

Assists you in creating your own content by giving you tools that allow you to generate a wide range of content quickly. Copy.ai may be used to write ad copy, blog entries, product descriptions, website copy, and sales copy, among other things. Copy.ai allows you to choose the type of writing project, give it some context, and then see results right away.

2.2 Midjourney

an AI-powered tool that is capable of producing mind-boggling visuals of astounding quality and precision. It can act as visual inspiration and help overcome creative barriers.

img-6@3x

I used the following prompt for the previous example: 'an isometric 3D version of a design factory in which visual representations or icons of UI elements can be seen in blue, light gray, orange, and purple colors.' The AI took 60 seconds to develop four images based on the prompt provided, and the results were outstanding.

2.3 Tome

It helps you generate presentations quickly by utilizing artificial intelligence. You specify the presentation format and topic, and it generates a series of slides with text and images for free. You can change the theme and design at any time, as well as retouch the text contents. It is currently in beta and is available for free.

img-7@3x

In this case, I asked the AI to generate a presentation about generative AI, and the result was incredible: a deck of 12 slides with high-quality text and pictures. The platform allows users to change the theme and styles, as well as regenerate or polish material as needed.

3. Generative AI in design

AI has found its niche in design, sparking a fascinating synergy between human creativity and artificial intelligence, allowing artists, designers, and content creators to tap into the power of AI to optimize workflows, unlock innovation, and enhance their creative output.

Over the following few years, generative AI should become significantly more helpful in the creative process.

It is important to acknowledge that creative professionals consider technology (such as hardware and software) to be essential for carrying out their creative and design work. However, some of them are deeply concerned about the threat that artificial intelligence represents to their work. They are aware that, in many situations, their abilities may be replaced by technology, which may even be less expensive and time-consuming for creative companies. A recent Pfeiffer study illustrates the differences in perspectives and positions among the 75+ design experts surveyed.

The survey indicates that "more than half of respondents expressed interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning and their contributions to the creative process. Just 12% of respondents reported being "absolutely indifferent." The study further reveals that creatives, in general, do not fear these technologies taking over their work because they believe that creativity is essentially human. Read the full article.

Key takeaways

  • AI's growing capabilities: Artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay and will continue to make significant strides, becoming more capable and useful in the coming years. It will become our permanent assistant, enhancing our abilities, speeding up our creative processes, and helping us tackle the challenges we face in our daily work.
  • Caution and awareness in AI: It is important to exercise caution and awareness in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI technology. As a world-renowned futurist, influencer, and thought leader in the fields of business and technology, Bernard Marr, highlights in his article The Evolution Of AI: Transforming the World One Algorithm at a Time, "there are still challenges and ethical concerns that must be addressed as technology continues to evolve. Privacy, security, and the potential misuse of AI are critical issues that require careful consideration and regulation.".
  • AI as a complement, not a substitute: it is critical to understand that AI is not a substitute for human creativity and intelligence. Creativity is a distinctive characteristic of the human mind, and while technology can produce impressive outcomes and propose novel solutions, it lacks the ability to have the unique experiences, emotions, and viewpoints that humans contribute to the creative process. Human creativity is supported by imagination, intuition, and the ability to think outside the box.
